The Foundation of Our Faith: Truth, Eternity, and the Gift of Salvation

In a world that seems to change its mind every single day, finding something solid to stand on can feel like a tall order. We see opinions shifting, values evolving, and the definition of "truth" becoming more subjective by the minute. But here at Solid Rock Baptist Church, we believe that there is a foundation that never cracks and a light that never dims.

Whether you are a long-time believer or someone just starting to ask the big questions about life, we want to share the timeless truths that form the bedrock of everything we do. These aren't just ideas we’ve come up with; they are the core pillars of the Christian faith that have provided hope and direction for generations. Today, we want to talk about three life-changing realities: the absolute truth of the Bible, the reality of eternity, and the incredible, free gift of salvation.

The Bible is Absolute Truth

When we talk about "truth" today, people often say, "Well, that’s your truth." But we believe that for life to have real meaning and direction, there must be an ultimate standard. For us, that standard is the Bible. We believe the Bible isn’t just a collection of ancient stories or good moral advice; it is the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God.

When we say the Bible is absolute truth, we mean that it is the final say on who God is, who we are, and how we are meant to live. In 2 Timothy 3:16, we are told, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" That means the words on those pages carry the very breath and authority of our Creator.

In our Southern Utah community, we see so many people searching for a sense of purpose. We find that purpose when we align our lives with God's Word. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105) It doesn't matter what the current trends are; "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever." (Isaiah 40:8) At Solid Rock Baptist Church, our teaching is centered entirely on the scriptures because we know that human wisdom fails, but God’s truth never does.

Are Heaven and Hell Real Places?

This is perhaps one of the most significant questions any human being can ask. In a culture that often prefers to avoid the topic of death or treat the afterlife as a vague, "pleasant" mystery, the Bible is clear. We believe that heaven and hell are real, literal places, and that every single soul will spend eternity in one of them.

God created us for fellowship with Him. He is holy, just, and perfect. Heaven is described as a place of peace and joy—most importantly, it is where we dwell in the direct presence of God. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." (Revelation 21:4) It is the home for those who have been redeemed.

On the flip side, because God is just, there must be a consequence for sin. The Bible describes hell as real separation and real judgment. "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." (Matthew 25:46) It’s a sobering reality, but it is one that Scripture speaks about because God loves us enough to tell us the truth. He doesn't want anyone to be lost. The Lord is "not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9) Understanding the reality of eternity gives our lives today a sense of urgency and importance. It’s why we are so passionate about sharing the gospel here in St. George: because we know that where we spend forever is the most important decision we will ever make.

Salvation is a Free Gift from God

If the reality of eternity feels heavy, there is good news that outweighs it all. The most beautiful truth in the universe is that while we are all sinners and fall short of God's standard, God has provided a way back to Him. That way is through Jesus Christ.

Many religions tell you that you have to work your way to God: that you have to be "good enough," follow enough rules, or perform enough rituals to earn a spot in heaven. But the gospel tells a different story. We believe that salvation is a free gift. You cannot earn it, you cannot buy it, and you certainly don't deserve it. It is given purely out of God's grace.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Jesus Christ, being fully God and fully man, lived the perfect life we couldn't live and died the death we deserved on the cross. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) When He rose from the grave three days later, He defeated death and sin once and for all. "He is not here: for he is risen, as he said." (Matthew 28:6) All we have to do is reach out and accept that gift through faith. It is a simple act of trusting that what Jesus did was enough. This "free gift" is the most life-changing reality anyone can experience. It brings peace, forgiveness, and the absolute certainty of eternal life. "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

Learning Together at Solid Rock

We know that these are big concepts to wrap your head around. That’s why we emphasize the importance of studying the Word together. We don't want you to just take our word for it; we want you to see it for yourself in the pages of the Bible.

Whether it’s during our Sunday morning worship or our mid-week Bible studies, we dive into these timeless truths. We want to provide a space where you can ask questions, grow in your understanding, and find a community of believers who are all walking this path together. We desire for every person in the St. George area to know the stability that comes from building their life on the "Solid Rock" of Christ. "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:" (Matthew 7:24)
