Why Do We Have to Die?

Romans 5:12

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Hebrews 9:27

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

It has been well put that there are only two things in life that are certain: death and taxes.  There is no escaping the fact that we will all take our last breath one day.  But have you ever wondered, “why do we have to die?” Indeed, many have pondered this very question.  Modern science and medicine constantly battle to end this inevitable plight.  But death is one problem that even the smartest minds will never find a solution to.  So, how do we answer the question of WHY we have to die?

First, we must realize where death originated.  The origins of death are not in the original creation.  Biblically speaking, when God finished His work of creation, the Bible says, “it was very good.”  To us, good is merely acceptable; but to God, good is perfection.  So, as the sixth day closed and the seventh dawned, what God had created was not just acceptable, it was perfect.  It was not until the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, disobeyed the ONE commandment that God gave them (to not take of the tree in the midst of the garden) that man began to die.

Secondly, we must understand that all death finds its origin in one thing, SIN.  If there was no sin, there would be no death.  Simply put, the reason that we must face death is sin.  The nature of sin and the consequences of it, death, have been passed down to you and me from the very first man and woman.

But, I have some great news!!

Did you know that there is a remedy for this incurable disease that we call death?  Did you know that, although you cannot escape physical death, you can escape eternal death?

It was because of the disobedience of one, Adam, that we all die.  But the Bible goes on to tell us that because of the obedience of One, Jesus Christ, we can receive the free gift of eternal life.

Romans 5:17

17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.
